Our mission: to produce outstanding opera, to develop and cultivate a wider public interest in opera and its allied arts, and to further music education in the region.
Our vision: to be an important source of community pride and a valued asset that is integral to the cultural landscape and to inspire anticipation in patrons with consistently exciting and memorable performances.
Each year, the Sacramento Opera produces a main stage season consisting of three fully-staged operas of three performances each with live orchestra. These works are typically presented in the original language of composition. For the convenience of our patrons, English captions or translations are projected above the stage for each production. Shows take place in the 2,380-seat Community Center Theater located at 13th and L Streets in downtown Sacramento.
Principal and secondary guest artists are drawn from throughout the United States with special emphasis on artists from the West Coast. Choristers are residents of the Sacramento region who are selected through annual auditions. Orchestra musicians are engaged through the Sacramento Philharmonic Orchestra.
Sacramento Opera’s 2009-2010 Season opens on November 20, 22, and 24, 2009, with Gaetano Donizetti’s comic and wistful look at the foibles of young love and the misguided belief that true love can be bought in a bottle, The Elixir of Love. On February 26, 28, and March 2, 2010, we present Giuseppe Verdi’s gripping melodrama of the follies of love won and lost, La Traviata. Our season closes on May 7 and 9, 2010 with “A Russian Affair,” an extraordinarily special treat. In two performances only, we will present opera at its grandest in a Russian double-bill featuring concert stagings of two of Tchaikovsky’s greatest pieces, Eugene Onegin and The Queen of Spades, both based on the works of one of Russia’s most acclaimed writers, Alexander Pushkin. “A Russian Affair” features Tchaikovsky’s glorious music for the lyric stage performed by an outstanding cast of acclaimed singers, led by Maestro Rolek and accompanied by the Sacramento Philharmonic Orchestra. An event you simply won’t want to miss.
All shows feature English supertitles and the Sacramento Philharmonic Orchestra. For ticket information, call 916.808.5181 or visit tickets.com. To learn more about the Sacramento Opera, visit www.sacopera.org. Be sure to find us on facebook and twitter
